Create a query config
A query config is a saved set of accounts and data options, with a name. You pick it in Google Data Studio when you add a data source. Google Data Studio calls the result a data source.
A query config stores only its name, its accounts, and a few data options. You choose the metrics, dimensions, date ranges, and filters in Google Data Studio, when you build the report.
Prerequisites
- A connection to the connector, with at least one enabled account. See Create a connection.
- A role that can create query configs
Create a query config
Open the connector
In the Hub, select Google Data Studio in the sidebar. Then select the connector, such as Google Ads.
Start a query config
Select Create query config.
Name the query config
In Name your query config, type a name. You see this name in Google Data Studio when you choose the query config. For example:
- "Google Analytics - Traffic"
- "Facebook Ads - Campaign performance"
- "Shopify - Monthly sales"
Select accounts
Select the accounts that the query config uses. For some connectors, you can select more than one account.
Set the options
Some connectors have more options here, such as a report type. If the connector supports currency conversion, you can select a currency in Convert currency to.
Save
Select Save. Google Data Studio opens in a new tab, ready to add the query config as a data source.
Use a query config in Google Data Studio
You can also start from a report:
- On the Google Data Studio page in the Hub, select Create report.
- Choose the connector, then choose or create a query config.
- Select Create from scratch, or select a template.
Google Data Studio opens with the query config selected. See Build a report.
Edit a query config
- On the connector's page in the Hub, find the query config.
- Select the edit button next to it.
- Change the name, the accounts, or the options.
- Save your changes.
Important: All reports that use the query config get the change.
Delete a query config
- On the connector's page in the Hub, find the query config.
- Select the delete button next to it.
- Select Delete to confirm.
The query config is permanently deleted. Reports that use it can't get data until you select a different data source for them in Google Data Studio.
Check your query configs
The connector's page lists its query configs. You can search them and filter them by status. A query config shows a warning when its last run failed, for example when an account shows No access or a connection Needs reconnecting.
Good practice for query configs
Use clear names:
- Make names easy to understand.
- Include the connector, the client, or the purpose in the name.
- Do not use vague names, such as "Report" or "Data".
Keep reports focused:
- In Google Data Studio, add only the metrics and dimensions that you need.
- Large charts can make a report slow.
- If a report is large, split it into smaller pages or reports.
Available data
Each connector has its own metrics and dimensions:
- Advertising platforms: impressions, clicks, spend, conversions, CPC, ROAS
- Analytics platforms: users, sessions, page views, events, conversion rates
- E-commerce platforms: revenue, orders, average order value, product performance
- Databases: any data that you have permission to query
See the page for each connector for the data that it has.
Speed
Speed Boost copies your account data, so that queries run faster:
- Before the first use: the account warms up. Queries can be slower until it shows Ready to use.
- After warming up: queries use the copied data, and run faster.
- Large requests: can still take longer.
If a report is slow, use a shorter date range or fewer dimensions in Google Data Studio.
Troubleshooting
No data in the report
- Wait until the accounts show Ready to use.
- Check that the accounts have data for the date range.
- Check the filters in Google Data Studio.
- Check that the accounts are enabled.
The data looks wrong or incomplete
- Compare the results with the platform.
- Check the filters in Google Data Studio.
- Check the date range.
- Check the accounts in the query config.
The report is slow in Google Data Studio
- Use fewer dimensions in each chart.
- Use a shorter date range.
- Add filters to get less data.
- Split the report into smaller pages.
